Chester by the Sea

Native Mi'kmaq tradition has it that at the time of creation, Glooscap, the native God-Spirit, cast handfuls of earth into the pristine waters of Nova Scotia's Mahone Bay, thus forming the over 100 beautiful seaside islands that exist here today. Most of the islands, many gifted with beautiful white beaches, are open to the public for exploration, picnics, lobster boils, swimming, and the enjoyment of the natural, untouched beauty that exists here. It is easily possible for you to be able to find amongst these hundred islands your very own private island for a day, with a spot in the lee to enjoy the sun, swim, and collect seashells.

Chester was first settled by New England planters and fishermen in 1759, and has been a summer haven for Americans, Canadians, and Europeans since the 1850's. Many American families have been coming here for over 150 years from such places as Baltimore, New York, Boston, Washington and elsewhere on the Eastern Seaboard, lured by the uncomplicated beauty and lack of crowds on Nova Scotia's South Shore.

Summer residents of Chester include CEO's, famous writers, artists, bank presidents, inventors, politicians, industrialists, ambassadors, as well as an assortment of other eclectic folks who all add to the mix of this vibrant community. All congregate and interact easily with the warm and welcoming local population in the low-key setting of Chester.

In a recent article about the lifestyles of Canada's wealthy, Canada's National Post named Chester one of the most popular summer destinations in Canada. Harrowsmith magazine named Chester one of the top 10 prettiest towns in Canada, and 50 Plus magazine named Chester the # 1 retirement destination in Canada for active Canadians.

So why is it that so many people consider Chester a "piece of heaven"?

Besides offering the pleasures of living on the clear waters of Mahone Bay, and the obvious natural attractions that exist here, Chester offers an incomparable lifestyle. Boating is a major activity in Chester, and Yacht racing has been a tradition here since 1856 when the first Regatta was held. The Chester Yacht Club, which is the focal point of most social activity in the town in the summertime, celebrated it's 100th anniversary in 2001.

Chester Race Week is one of the largest Regattas to be held on the East Coast and attracts hundreds of sailors here every August for a week of sailing, sun, fun, and camaraderie. Chester race week includes all classes of yachts, from the locally designed Bluenose Class, to indigenous Classic designs built over 70 years ago, which still grace our horizons with their beautiful white sails and sleek waterlines.

In addition to the yachting, which is Chester's greatest tradition, Chester offers a world-class 18 hole seaside golf course, live theatre at the Chester Playhouse, a large oceanfront Lido swimming pool, a skating and curling rink, tennis courts, as well as miles of hiking, biking and cross-country skiing opportunities along the Trans-Canada trail which runs through Chester.

Chester also offers services such as shopping, accommodation, marinas, art galleries, banks, a real French Bakery, Julien's, where you can sit outside and enjoy a morning croissant and espresso, as well as restaurants including the seaside Rope Loft, which in its previous incarnation was just that! You are able to dock your boat at the Rope Loft and sit outdoors on the deck to enjoy a nice meal and a cold one while admiring the passing boats on Chester's Front Harbour.

All of these services are within walking distance and the lack of traffic adds to the allure of Chester.
